Uncommon, sparsely distributed mainly in central and northern areas. Wingspan 55-70 mm. Sexes similar. Flies May to October, hibernates and flies again early in new year to mate (one generation). Main habitat sparse forests. Feeds on tree sap and takes salts from damp ground, rarely visits flowers. Powerful soaring flight around tree crowns. Excellent camouflage when settled on tree bark with closed wings.
